Lynita Cooksey

Patient Leader Lynita CookseyLynita is a retired scientist, university educator, and leader with more than 30 years of experience in research, academia, and service. Her career was grounded in education, inquiry, mentorship, and a commitment to helping others understand complex subjects. These values now guide her work as a patient advocate and writer.

After being diagnosed with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) in 2022, Lynita began navigating the condition as both a scientist and a patient. When Ursodiol did not provide an adequate response, she had the opportunity in 2024 to participate in a clinical trial for seladelpar (Livdelzi), which has brought positive results for her. Living with PBC has given her a deeply personal understanding of its uncertainty, challenges, and day-to-day realities.

Drawing on her scientific background and personal experience, Lynita writes about how PBC affects everyday life. She offers insight, encouragement, and reassurance to help others feel seen and understood as they navigate diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care.

Concerned about the growing burden of liver disease, Lynita hopes to establish a regional liver disease education program within her community. The program would raise awareness and promote greater understanding among people living with liver conditions, their families, and the broader community. Drawing on research and the expertise of health care professionals, she seeks to bring together her background in education and leadership with her experience as a patient. Her goal is to encourage informed conversations and meaningful support for people living with liver disease.

In her personal life, Lynita enjoys spending time with family and friends, sharing life with her Sheltie, and participating in community and service activities.
